Obesity is a pressing health issue in the United States, affecting approximately 42% of adults and significantly increasing their risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and various cancers. This condition also poses a heightened risk for periodontal disease, a concern for dental professionals. With around 6% of the population currently using weight loss medications like Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy to manage their blood glucose levels, and the recent FDA approval of tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Zepbound) for chronic weight management, it is essential for dental practitioners to stay informed about these medications. These medications can cause gastrointestinal discomfort or nausea that can be relevant when considering sedation options and managing potential post-operative discomfort or complications. Oral side effects may include altered taste, “Ozempic breath”, xerostomia, increased risk for caries and periodontal disease. This lecture course will equip dental professionals with the knowledge and skills to effectively address the unique challenges posed by obesity and weight-loss medications in their practices, thereby enhancing patient care and outcomes.

Educational Objectives:

• Evaluate strategies for providing nutritional counseling and motivational interviewing (MI) to support patients in managing their weight and improving their overall health.

• Discuss the various weight loss medications available, including their mechanisms, benefits, and potential side effects

• Assess the implications of obesity and weight loss medications on dental care, including the need for medical consultations, potential modifications to routine dental care, and considerations for sedation and oral hygiene instructions.
