Two million Americans are diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)—including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis—with an additional seventy thousand new cases annually. Simultaneously, about 10-20% of the adult population experiences irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). In this course, participants will define IBD, IBS, and celiac disease, discussing the differences between these conditions, their prognosis, and treatment methods. Participants will compare the oral signs of these conditions and assess the risks for oral diseases. Additionally, the course will evaluate the effects of medications, the need for medical consultation, modifications to routine dental care, and oral hygiene instructions for patients with these conditions.
Educational Objectives:
- Define inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and celiac disease and their symptoms
- Identify oral signs of gastrointestinal inflammatory conditions
- Compare treatment strategies for IBD, IBS, and celiac disease
- Discuss the oral effects of medications used to treat these conditions
- Evaluate the need for medical consultation and modifications for routine dental care and oral hygiene instructions
