The American College of Prosthodontists, in June 3, 2016, stated that dentists and specialists must screen for sleep apnea before utilizing night guards. Research has found that night guards make snoring and sleep apnea worse as the jaw falls back at night and obstructs the airway. Dentists must be trained on how to diagnose TMD. It has been estimated by the ADA that approximately 35% of the adult population suffers from TMD. This serious health problem must be diagnosed and corrected prior to any restorative, prosthetic or orthodontic treatment.
Phase I TM Joint Stabilization:
Daytime: Lower repositioning splint to recapture anteriorly displaced discs
Nighttime: Upper Anterior Deprogrammer to prevent clenching and bruxing
Ortho-TMD-Sleep Connection
- How early orthodontic treatment with functional and arch development appliances can prevent TMD and sleep apnea later on in life.
- The importance of diagnosing not only the malocclusion but also the presence of TM Dysfunction and sleep disorders.
- Establishing the ideal maxilla-mandibular relationship and a patent airway to prevent any parafunctional habits at night.
- Many Class II skeletal adult patients have a malocclusion, TM dysfunction and mild, moderate or severe sleep apnea
- Most chronic pain patients have problems sleeping which reduces the effectiveness of their treatment.
- Cardiovascular consequences of airway obstruction and sleep apnea include increased risk of heart attached, high blood pressure, strokes, Type 2 diabetes and GERD.
Numerous clinical cases will be shown to demonstrate the Ortho-TMD-Sleep connection
