This program is designed to provide a dental focus on controlled substances, providing an update on the current scope of the opioid epidemic and its impact on pain management in dentistry, as well as a review of the pharmacologic traits of opioids and those of non-opioid alternatives for the management of acute pain. Strategies to minimize the risk of opioid and controlled substance abuse and diversion are covered, as well as guidance on the recognition and management of patients with substance use disorders.

- Select appropriate opioid and non-opioid medications for the management of acute dental pain
- Recognize and prevent diversion and abuse of controlled substances in the dental practice
