A. Rising Into the Future: Digital Dentistry Clinical Workflows and Dental Hygiene 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

This lecture is designed to introduce dental hygienists to computer-assisted design/computer-assisted manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology in clinical practice, including digital workflows for fixed restorations, occlusal guards, smile design, and more. Attendees will leave with information that can be applied to clinical practice and education today. AGD Code: 490

This lecture will help participants use the 2017 American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Classifications of Periodontal Diseases as it relates to establishing a periodontal classification, treatment planning and patient management. AGD Code: 490

- List and describe the common periodontal classification categories according to the 2017 AAP Guidelines
- Describe the classification criteria for health, gingivitis and periodontitis
- Identify how to establish an accurate treatment plan for patients

C. That Gut Feeling: Gastrointestinal inflammatory conditions and oral health 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Two million Americans are diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) —Crohn’s & ulcerative colitis— and the number is increasing by 70 thousand new cases annually. At the same time, about 10-20% of the adult population has irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). During this course, participants will define IBD, and IBS and discuss the differences of these conditions, prognosis and methods of treatment. The participants will compare oral signs of these conditions and assess risks for oral diseases. The participants will also evaluate the effects of medications, need for medical consultation, modifications to routine dental care and oral hygiene instructions for patients with these conditions.
Educational Objectives:
- Define inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- List oral signs and symptoms of gastrointestinal inflammatory conditions
- Compare treatments strategies for IBD, and IBS
- Discuss oral effects of medications used to treat these conditions
